Dental Assistant Program

Program Structure and Format

ACC’s Dental Assisting program is designed for students seeking flexible learning options. Classes are offered in a blended format, requiring only two in-person class days per week, with the remaining coursework conducted online. This setup accommodates students’ busy schedules, particularly those balancing work or family responsibilities. Weekend class options are also available at the Los Angeles campus.

The program spans 10 months and covers both foundational knowledge and hands-on skills. Students engage with real-world scenarios, working alongside experienced professionals and using industry-standard dental equipment, allowing them to gain valuable, practical experience.

Core Curriculum

The Dental Assisting curriculum at ACC is structured around standalone modules, each focused on essential areas of dental care and patient interaction. Below are the core areas of study:

  • Fundamentals of Dental Assisting
This introductory module covers anatomy and physiology as it pertains to dentistry, along with a breakdown of the roles within a dental team.
  • Science of Dentistry
This course introduces microbiology, infection control, and OSHA regulations, essential for ensuring a safe dental environment.
  • Restorative Dentistry and Pharmacology
Students learn about dental materials and pharmacology, including the use of dental devices and relevant medications.
  • Laboratory Procedures and Prosthodontics
Covers impression materials and practices with prosthodontics, including permanent and removable options for patients.
  • Pediatric Dentistry and Orthodontics
This module focuses on pediatric and orthodontic techniques, emphasizing preventive and restorative care for young patients.
  • CPR and Preventive Dentistry
Offers training in first aid and dental disease prevention, along with an introduction to plaque control and nutrition’s role in oral health.
  • Endodontics and Radiography
Students learn about x-ray equipment operation, safety protocols, and film mounting. Successful completion leads to a state certificate for x-ray use in dental offices.
  • Oral Surgery and Anesthetics
Prepares students for assisting in dental surgical procedures and anesthesia administration techniques.
  • Externship
The 180-hour externship gives students hands-on experience in a professional dental setting, where they can apply and solidify their learning under the supervision of qualified personnel.

Practical Skills You’ll Develop

The ACC Dental Assisting program focuses on preparing students for real-world demands in dental offices. Key skills taught include:

  • Patient Care: From patient preparation to dental procedure support, students learn how to foster a comfortable, supportive environment for clients.
  • X-Ray Processing: Training on operating x-ray equipment safely and accurately.
  • Dental Equipment Management: Handling and maintaining dental tools and supplies.
  • Coronal Polishing and Crowns: Skills in polishing and assisting with mold-making and crown placement.

Students also gain experience with administrative responsibilities, such as managing dental records, ordering supplies, and instructing patients on oral hygiene practices.

Certifications and Career Preparation

Graduates of ACC’s Dental Assisting program are prepared to pursue the Registered Dental Assistant (RDA) credential, which, although not mandatory for all dental assistant positions in California, can enhance job prospects and earning potential. The program also provides the necessary education for students to obtain:

  • Coronal Polishing Certification
  • Pit and Fissure Certification
  • California Radiation Safety Certificate (limited to dental x-rays)

These certifications allow graduates to perform a wider range of duties and may give them an advantage in the job market.

Prerequisites

The following are prerequisites for enrollment in ACC’s Dental Assisting Program:

  • High School Diploma or GED: Proof of completion is generally required.
  • Background Check: Some dental offices may require a background check for externship eligibility.
  • Vaccination Records: Students might need up-to-date vaccination records for participation in clinical settings.

Tuition and Financial Aid

The total cost for the Dental Assisting program at ACC is estimated at $21,230, including tuition, fees, and materials. ACC offers guidance in navigating financial aid options for those who qualify, such as federal student loans and scholarships. Prospective students are encouraged to speak with ACC’s financial aid advisors to explore available funding opportunities.

Externship: Real-World Dental Experience

A key feature of ACC’s Dental Assisting program is the 160-hour externship, where students apply classroom learning in an actual dental setting. This practical experience enables students to work directly with patients and dental professionals, helping them gain the confidence and skill needed to excel in their careers. The externship is also an opportunity to build a network within the dental industry, which can be invaluable for job placement after graduation.
