Dental Assistant Program

Program Structure and Options

The Registered Dental Assistant (RDA) program at WLAC is designed for both day and evening schedules, allowing students flexibility based on their availability. The Day Program starts each Fall semester with classes from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM, Monday through Thursday. The Evening Program begins each Spring, running from 3:00 PM to 9:30 PM, Monday through Friday. This 9-month, hybrid format combines in-person lab sessions twice weekly with online lectures, creating a balanced, flexible schedule that fits various lifestyles.

Curriculum Highlights

The RDA program at WLAC covers essential topics to prepare students for certification in dental assisting. Here’s a breakdown of key courses:

  • First Semester: Courses include basic dental assistant orientation, infection control, dental sciences, and radiology, providing a strong foundation in dental care.
  • Intersession: Intermediate Chairside Assisting builds upon first-semester skills, focusing on patient care during procedures.
  • Final Semester: Advanced topics such as dental seminar, practice management, clinical science, and advanced chairside assisting round out the program, helping students develop practical and administrative skills for dental office work.

Students completing the program earn a Certificate of Achievement in Dental Assisting and are eligible to take the RDA exam, allowing them to qualify for licensure as a Registered Dental Assistant.

Prerequisites

Before applying, prospective students must meet the following prerequisites:

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Attendance at an Information Session
  • Submission of a Complete Application (including any required transcripts and forms)

Certifications and Degree Options

Upon successful program completion, students receive certification, qualifying them to sit for the California RDA exam. Graduates may also pursue additional certifications, such as the Orthodontic Assistant (OA) credential, offered each Fall and Spring. Students aiming for broader career options may complete additional general education requirements to obtain an Associate of Science in Dental Assisting (ASDA) degree.

Financial Aid and Support

WLAC provides various financial aid options, including federal aid, scholarships, and grants for those who qualify. Additionally, WLAC’s advisors can assist students in finding financial support tailored to their needs.

Learning Environment and Facilities

WLAC offers a well-equipped, state-approved facility where students practice skills like radiography, chairside assisting, and infection control. The program is designed to prepare students for real-world dental environments, and interested applicants can even view a virtual tour of the facility created by program alumni.
